Affordable Housing
Why is it so expensive to live in Flagstaff?
There are many factors, including:
Lack of available land that can be developed
University off-campus housing increasing rents
Short-term rentals reducing the stock of long-term rentals
Too many second homes
Too few good-paying jobs
So, what can we do about this lingering problem that affects us all in so many ways?
We need to finish a plan that’s already begun: Proposition 442, a $20 million bond measure aimed at increasing affordable housing options passed in the November 2022 election. We need to insist that its objectives are fully met:
Redevelop city-owned properties and other existing buildings into affordable rental housing.
Expand Flagstaff's homebuyer assistance program.
Incentivize private developers to include affordable units in new developments.
Beyond that, we need to get creative. I’d like to see the city provide financial assistance to businesses interested in providing employee housing.
Jobs and Employment
Tourism is our #1 industry in Flagstaff. We need to take care of our 8,000 hospitality workers and help them to find affordable housing and healthcare in the community.
Small businesses make Flagstaff unique and should be supported. I would like to see greater utilization of the Moonshot Entrepreneur program and available business space. There are opportunities to draw upon the depth of knowledge in our community to launch new businesses.
Transportation
I believe in data driven decision making. This is especially true related to transportation. We already have cell phone data that shows how people commute in and around Flagstaff. We should use this data to plan for larger corridors in our city and options for commuters from Williams and other areas.
